When work is play, then all work cannot equal no play.

I've got quite a bit to cover so here it is in no particular order...

Zoe has been a handful sometimes, I don't know what I would do without Gina helping me out. Sometimes she's the perfect little girl and then other times it seems like she just wants to see me crack under preasure (luckily I have Gina to go to before I curl up in the corner and cry though). :) She's been getting big and getting a lot more active so it's been fun for both of us, Gina has the toughest job though since she's with her during the day and she mostly sleeps at night but Gina is much more prepared for this then I could have ever been so it's working out nicely. I'm glad the whole family is happy with the current arrangement because I don't know what I would do if I worked days and we had to get a 2nd car.

Saturday I had a meeting with the other members on the Board of Directors for Pit Bull Happenings, Inc.. It was our first meeting ever and it went great. I am really excited about all of the stuff we covered and all of the things we're going to be doing this year. We all had some good ideas and hopefully this will kickstart PBH in the right direction, not to say it wasn't already but having a core group of focused individuals on the same page will surely make it much easier and will only improve things.

I had my 2nd interview last week and it went great (again, I think). It was the technical test so I had to login to a server and perform various tasks and prove my abilities. I got stumped on one command (df -i, never used it or needed to use it before but now I'll never forget it). I had the final interview with the CEO scheduled for Thursday but it was eventually rescheduled for Monday so I've been filled with anticipation all weekend. I hope everything goes perfect but I have some doubts that they won't be able to agree with my salary and/or schedule so we'll see. The more I read about the company the more I want to work there, even if it's just on my days off at Raymond James. :D

Lately I've been spending a lot of time inside my servers (that sounds either really geeky or really creepy, not sure which). I finally ditched my cPanel VM from GigeNETCloud and replaced it with a simple Arch Linux VM with no GUI and Lighttpd. I've been having a lot of fun playing with it and configuring it to do what I want, it's infinitely more rewarding when you get something working when it wasn't designed for that system. I faught with AWStats for a long time a week or 2 ago with no success but I got it working the other night and am very happy to have it back.

Secure Dragon LLC. has been up and running but with little success due to our overly cautious mindset right now. We are all extremely confident in the system and have been testing it for months but we're still not ready to release it as a completely finished product so we're keeping it in beta and not advertising it as much as we want to. We'd like to get a handful of clients using it for a bit and giving us some feedback before we can relax. So right now we're still trying to find people willing to test it out for us for free but behind the scenes we've been working hard on our new system (completely custom client area and backend). We shall see where this takes us I guess.

I've been spending a lot of time on LowEndBox and LowEndTalk because I've been interested in finding some servers for testing and development, well I picked up a nice little VPS from 123Systems for $15 A YEAR (no referral link here), yes, that's a fully functional Virtual Private Server with root access for $1.25 a month! It's using OpenVZ for virtualization which I'm not a big fan of but hey, it works. It's got 192MB of RAM (384MB burtstable), 10GB of disk space, 500GB of bandwidth, 1 IP address, and they have Arch Linux as an OS choice so I am a happy camper. Right now I have it setup for monitoring and I even wrote an awesome little script based on this script here that will check all of my servers and writes whether they are online or offline to a log with the date and time and if they are offline I get an e-mail with the data and time and server. I am running the script every minute with cron and will be playing with it tonight to get a lot more detailed and more features. I plan on writing the results to a MySQL database so I can have a public PHP page with charts and trending and I will be putting some error checking into the script to prevent false alerts due to possible network issues. Lastly, I will be setting it to connect to my actual webpage and pull the HTTP header info so even if the server is respondign to ICMP the website might not be online. I'm a bit excited about this project as I plan on picking up a few more LEBs (Low End Boxes) and having them work together so incase one goes down or has network issues I will have redundancy in the monitoring.

Lastly, I've been working a lot more on one of my MyBB plugins: MyHosting. I'm happy with it even though I no longer have a cPanel server I picked up a cheap (~$5/month) cPanel reseller from HostATree(referral) for testing and my non-personal sites.

Ok well I'l going to get back to work, or play, whatever. :D

work, family, servers, cpanel, pit bull happenings
