Building my new webserver from scratch...
12-03-2010 @ 11:23PM EST
I've decided to piece together all of the software components instead of using cPanel like I do now, mainly for better performance and control. I plan on keeping my cPanel VM up but I will use that for shared hosting for friends, family, and such.
So here's what I've decided on.
OS: CentOS 5.5 x64 or Debian 5 (CentOS is preferred but Debian might be easier since it's supported by SysCP).
HTTP: Lighttpd
MTA: Postfix
POP/IMAP: Dovecot
FTP: PureFTP
DNS: BIND9 (possibly PowerDNS after I play with it a bit)
Control Panel: SysCP
Security: ClamAV, ASSP, ConfigServer Firewall
I hope to start working on the server this weekend when I get some free time but for now I'm happy with my cPanel VM (although at nights when I'm online the CPU loads are painful at times).
