Wipeout (TV)

Round 1 - The Qualifier
Starts off with 24 people (sometimes 12 couples) and the 12 people with the best times move on to the next round. This round is based on time and if you cannot finish an obstacle you can move on to the next one by swimming to the next one which results in a longer time than having had completed the obstacle itself. Each contestant (or couple) will go one at a time. This round is known for the "big balls" (4 very large dodgeball-like balls that form a bridge to the next obstable and contestants have to jump on to cross).
Round 2 - The Eliminator
This round puts the remaining lot together in a group obstacle course in a "last man standing" type of event. They do it all in one shot where they continue going until there are only 6 left or 6 finished. The last 6 standing or the first 6 to finish move on.
Round 3 - Road to the Final 4
While I don't recall seeing a round 3 in every show (I think they skip this for the couples), this one is similar to round 2 except they reset the round each time a contestant completes it so the others start fresh (and tire quickly). There are 4 winners in this one.
Round 4 - The Wipeout Zone
This is the ultimate obstacle course and the contestant with the best time wins the $50,000. The conditions are horrible (sometimes they cover everything in foam so they slide on even solid ground) and the contestants usually use up their strength quickly with some of them never even finishing (20 minutes is the maximum time allowed).
All in all it's a very entertaining show so give it a shot! Oh, but if you find yourself watching "Total Wipeout" (UK version), don't bother. I watched 1 episode and the commentators humor was dry and lacking the wit of his American counterparts, while the actual obstacles were interesting, the people were not.
